Panasonic Lumix G80 (G85): Review
9/19/2016, Milan Šurkala
Panasonic has just released the new mirrorless camera Lumix DMC-G80 (DMC-G85, DMC-G81). It has 4K video mode, second generation of Dual IS system, 3.5mm jack for stereo microphone and it is also dust and water resistant. How did it perform in our test?
List of chapters:
This chapter is going to present sample images taken with the Panasonic Lumix G80 (G81, G85) camera and the Lumix 12-60mm F3.5-5.6 lens.
There are quite good details especially in the central part of the image. You can download the RAW version of the photo.
The tested piece of the lens was a little bit weak on the left side (a slight manufacturing defect). Nevertheless, the details are really good. You can see moiré effect in the grey part of the building. RAW is also provided.
ISO 3200 is relatively high sensitivity. Even though, the image quality is reasonable, surprisingly good for a 4/3-inch type sensor (of course, there is noise). I like the colours. You can download RAW sample.

Plenty of details in the central part. 12-60mm lens suffers from chromatic aberration in the corners.
The camera has an above average autofocus system for night shots. The image quality is good too. RAW version of the image is provided. You can try to recover highlights or shadows. Lumix G80/G81/G85 has a quite good dynamic range, nevertheless, dramatic changes of luminance will cause growth of noise levels.
High ISO 3200 sensitivity slightly degrades details and colours. Still, it is quite good image quality for 4/3-inch type sensor.
Excellent corner-to-corner sharpness. Very good job.

If the noise removal function is set to the average level, it is extremely strong, actually. You can see very smudged details in the bottom right corner. I strongly recommend to set the smallest value of -5 for noise removal function. JPEGs will be much better. You can download the RAW image.
The dual image stabilization system consists of an optical system in the lens and a mechanical (sensor) system in the body. As you can see, I was able to take relatively shake-free image handheld with 1/10s exposure time. My record was approx. 1/2 seconds with 120mm EQ focal length. Not tack sharp but reasonably sharp, though.
Very nice sharpness of the street lamp. Bokeh is a little bit nervous but it is not the fault of the body.
You have to expects higher noise with ISO 1600 and similar sensitivities but there is still an reasonable amount of details. With sensitive edits of the RAW file, you can obtain a very nice image.
No complaints about the image quality. The central sharpness is excellent and corners are not much worse. RAW image is provided.
Even though ISO 1600 sensitivity was used, noise levels are acceptable and the image quality is quite good.
Sometimes things are not going so well. The left part is without any flaws but you can see a large amount of ghosts and chromatic aberration in the right part of the image. Nevertheless, it is a matter of overall very good Panasonic 12-60mm lens.
No problems at all. The sharpness is very good from corner to corner and the absence of AA filter helped to achieve such a high amount of details.

In this case, ISO 1000 sensitivity was set by a mistake. Even though, the image quality is fine, the noise levels are low and details are really good.

Kit 12-60mm lens is not an ideal portrait lens but it is usable. It provides very good sharpness, reasonable small depth of field and the camera can help with a very good face detection system. RAW photo is also provided.
